There is incredibly rich material on anti-racism, whiteness, Black history, movements such as Black Lives Matter, it is difficult to know where to start. This page collects some annotated suggestions for readers, watchers, listeners, doers, and more. Let's keep this page alive as we find materials that speak to us. The Vanishing Half by Brit Bennett   A novel that narrates the experience of identical twin girls who choose to live their lives in different parts of the United States, one as white, one as "colored." The Warmth of Other Suns: The Epic Story of America’s Great Migration by Isabel Wilkerson  

White Fragility, by Robin DiAngelo   Racism is a system of oppression that puts one group, white people, at an advantage and oppresses people of culture. Everyone living in the US receives this acculturation, regardless of the color of their skin. To deconstruct the system of racism, those who have the unearned privilege must actively oppose institutionalized racism. Good people are racists; the call is to become anti-racists.

Why Are the Black Kids All Sitting Together in the Cafeteria? by Beverly Daniel TatumDr. Tatum is a sociologist who describes different elements of systemic racism and its impact on all our lives.


Movies

13A Netflix documentary that may be available FOR FREE on YouTube. Although the 13th amendment ended slavery, its wording supported a continuing system of labor for free and the biased incarceration of Black people.  Michelle Alexander, the author of The New Jim Crow, is one of those interviewed throughout the film.

The Best of Enemies   TRUE story where a KKK leader and a Black community activist ultimately connected as people/friends as they worked through a tense community event in 1971. At the end, it shows the two real people. Inspirational. People can change!

Fences  A Pulitzer prize winning play remade as a movie, it chronicles the life of an African American family in the 1950s and 1960s.

Harriet  Harriet Tubman escaped slavery and became a leader in the Underground Railway; she never lost a single passenger.

I Am not Your Negro, produced and directed by Raoul Peck    beautifully edited series of readings, contemporary news images and footage of James Baldwin speaking to racism and life in the United States.

If Beale Street Could Talk   Based on the novel by James Baldwin, this story is set in 1970s Harlem where a young family fights for justice.

Selma   Dr. King led a three-month protest that culminated in the march on Selma, Alabama and ultimately led to the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

United Shades of America with W. Kamau Bell, CNN https://www.cnn.com/shows/united-shades-of-america  Brief interviews and explorations of a variety of topics from the experience of Sikh children to the Standing Rock action to what white supremacy looks like in the United States. Now in its fifth season, these are sips of insight, 1 to 3 minutes in length. Be aware, sometimes Kamau Bell's politics comes through and you may not agree. It's still worth watching.
